Seminar List Abstract Preparation Main Text
One of the problems that many have with contemporary music is that the form can be, apparently, difficult to perceive. I don't think this is necessarily true, or at least that it is no more true than of any other form of western art music, but this seminar looks at the relationships between earlier forms and more contemporary forms.
Think about different types of form, and how those forms work.
Think about how sonata form, the most prominent form of western art music from 1750 to the early twentieth century. What is its structure? Why does it work? Does it work?
Think about the mainly nineteenth century idea called 'romanticism'. Where does the idea come from? Why did it arise? What effect did it have on music?
