Write for three people who will play percussion, plus one person who will play a pitched instrument, or sing. You may use any percussion that is available in the Performing Arts Studio. It is your responsibility to organise, rehearse and direct performers, although there will be some time for rehearsal on the days...
The Rules
The pitched player or singer may only use one instrument or only sing.
The pitched instrument may not be a piano.
You may not use repeat marks of any variety in the piece - that is, the standard repeat signs, da capos and the repeat last bar/last two bars, etc., signs:
, and .
Choose percussion instruments that are yours, or percussion that is available from the Performing Arts Studio. You may not use percussion from the Zion Baptist Hall.
All three percussionists must be necessary; that is, it should not be possible to perform the piece with less than three.
Duration should not fall outside the following formula:
average tempo * average number of beats per bar * number of bars > 4800 and <20000.
Recommended
I would recommend that you write your piece in ternary form, that is ABA', but should you choose to follow this scheme, A' must not be a direct repeat of A.
Ideas you might think about:
Contrast some fast lively textures with something much more static and/or lyrical.
Think about creating and manipulating textures.
Try to avoid the automatic conclusion that the sole use for percussion is to provide a repeated, predictable rhythm.
