The Minimalism Project

Project List

Introduction

For an introduction to minimalism see the notes concerning Minimalism, Music and the USA, and the Composition 3 notes on the subject.

The Rules

NB These rules are provisional and may be honed and crafted by discussion during the introductory session.

  1. The score must be handwritten! No copying or pasting! Of course, you may, as usual, use techology to help you, but the final project must be handwritten;

  2. The composition may be for any combination of instruments. As usual, though, balance your instrumentation with the other contents of your portfolio;

  3. The composition should be of approximately three to five minutes duration;

  4. Bear in mind that arguably minimalism works in a way different from other music - some minimalism is 'more' minimalist than others;

  5. Bear in mind that you are writing an entire ('though short) composition - not an excerpt. You need to watch out that you don't use a style more appropriate to longer compositions;

  6. Finished compositions will be performed during week 8.

Some Ideas

Consult the linked notes above for examples of music to listen to...

You might find it useful, also, to contemplate some minimalist art.
