Introduction

One of the key areas of composition, especially since the turn of the twentieth century, has been the use of layers of material. This can enable significant levels of organisation using quite simple material. Perhaps the simplest examples are those using bitonality. Good examples of composers utilising bitonality are Milhaud, Stravinsky and many others, especially during the first half of the twentieth century.

It is possible that apart from its intellectual interest, a part of the use of layering and multi-tonality arose from the need to separate complex narrative ideas in certain musics. So, it is in the early Stravinsky ballets, such as the Firebird, Petrushka and The Rite of Spring that
