Music and mathematics are often compared, but how useful is such a relationship. The tendency is for this claim to come from those who have a specific reason to emphasise such a relationship. When the link is investigated, it often appears to be little more than a rather vague sort of waffle about structures and abstraction, whereas it is quite clear that one of the fundamentals of music is performance, drama, intuition, etc.
I would suggest that there is indeed a link between music and mathematics, but that this link is not unique to music, although the link may be a little more clear in this area.
Ironically, I feel that the link is greater, at least in a metaphorical sense, with a physical science such as physics, which seeks to find mathematical patterns in nature.
