There are as many ways to compose as there are composers, so there is nothing specific that anyone can tell anyone about this process. However, it is possible to point people in certain directions, to hint at ways of doing things - there are no guarantees that composers will find these ideas useful or interesting, but you should have a go at some of them. Try not to think about composing as if it were simply a form of expression, but also as a form of experimentation, a way of getting to know more about yourself.
Simple is not the same as being familiar with a particular style. Many composers assume that because they are familiar with another composer's style that the music is straightforward. The reverse is usually the case.

Plan your composition. Don't think of it in detail - try to keep an idea of it as a larger completed piece.
Map/painting/TV
If you have the chance, look at the film The Green Mile, but note that this is a somewhat disturbing film and contains several scenes that some may find upsetting. While you're watching it, consider, as well as the content of the film, it's structure - how the story is made, and how it works.
Also listen to some music and try to understand the techniques used. Compare classical types with popular or jazz techiques. You don't have to come to any conclusions yet (or ever), just think about it.
